Habitat for Humanity - Newsong Urban Ministries in Baltimore

New Song Urban Ministries in Sandtown - Sandtown Habitat for Humanity is one component of a holistic approach to neighborhood development known as "church-based Christian community development." Initiated in 1988, the program has grown to a staff of more than 75, mostly drawn from the community. Although the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood encompasses 72 square blocks in West Baltimore, the development program concentrates on a 15-block focus area in the north-central section of the community, where it is eliminating all vacant houses and providing various programs and opportunities that foster empowerment.

Many different individuals - black and white, poor and affluent, urban and suburban - are working closely together to break down barriers of race, geography, culture and class in order to rebuild the Sandtown community, presenting a model that shows incredible possibilities for hope and change.

New Song Community Church - An interracial congregation, is the foundation from which other community programs emanate. These programs, in addition to Sandtown Habitat for Humanity, include the following:

New Song Community Learning Center - The center has provided educational enrichment and assistance for Sandtown children and youth since 1991. About 150 children are involved in preschool (age 3) and after-school (K-12) programs and in New Song Academy, a public school with pre-kindergarten through 8th grade classes, created under Baltimore's New Schools Initiative. Plans call for adding a high school. Currently the center provides scholarship assistance for high school students. The center employs more than 30 full-time and part-time staff, mostly from the neighborhood.

New Song Family Health Services - This service provides adult and pediatric primary care for Sandtown residents. The full-time staff is supplemented by a network of volunteer doctors and nurse practitioners. It began as a part-time operation in 1991 and became full time in 1996, and now it sees several thousand patients annually in a rehabbed facility. The service partners with People's Community Center.

EDEN Jobs - This job development and placement program for unemployed residents has placed more than 1,300 individuals in jobs since 1994 and plans for 100 placements annually.

NEWBORN Holistic Ministries/Martha's Place - A community-based nonprofit addressing unmet needs of community residents, in partnership with New Song. Martha's Place is a residential 6-month recovery house for women overcoming drug addiction and transitioning to independent living.
